Kennedy and Johnson conducted a fairly honest ground war; Nixon changed the strategy for domestic political reasons to remove the US Army from the equation - and instead funded particularly evil guerillas who (brutally) killed far more civilians than the Army ever did, whilst also starting the policy of mass USAF bombing of civilian targets. Actually, not so much.
