are you arguing that if a male bricklayer can lay more bricks per hour than a female one that he should be paid more?

I don't think you pay brickies by the brick, but if a male bricklayer can lay more bricks per hour than a female one then you should certainly give him the job instead of her, and that wouldn't be discriminatory at all because he'd be better at his job than her. And that goes regardless of whether greater strength makes men, on average, better brickies.

Adams was already firmly in the Dawkins camp. They were close friends and in close agreement about religion and the derision with which it should be greeted.

If you think of his idea about what qualified someone to be ruler of the universe - a complete refusal to interfere in other people's lives - it's hard to see how he'd have ever been sympathetic to Banks who, whatever you think of his writing, is a totalitarian bigot in his politics.

I doubt Pratchett would want to be associated with Banks either.

I have been saying this for years, but usually when I say it people look shocked and offended (when I said it to a travel agent they acted as though I'd gone on a Nazi rant or something). I suspect this is because most women and many men dislike the idea of being weighed. To be convinced, I think people would need a firm sense of how much money they'd save. On the plus side, though, this would have a further benefit that overweight people would find out how much they weighed and would be incentivized to lose weight, probably making them healthier.

Ah but! The EU ruling on annuity rates has deemed that a physical difference between the sexes is not grounds for offering different pricing, ie just because men die younger does not mean you can offer them higher annuity rates. So it could be argued that pricing via weight is also indirect sex discrimination, as men weigh more than women on the whole (with some notable exceptions!) and thus would pay more. And the concept of 'discrimination' is predicated on the idea that prices should be equal for the sexes, not unequal because of physical differences. After all, are you arguing that if a male bricklayer can lay more bricks per hour than a female one that he should be paid more?

Personally I agree with the 'Price on weight' concept, I just think that there would have to be a base price of X for up to Y kilos of person +luggage, then Z extra per extra kilo of person or luggage.

"Callaghan’s government was bringing in labour market and regulatory reforms – they were the main cause of the whole Winter of Discontent thing. "

So if the Labour Party recognised the need for those reforms then why did they elect Michael Foot as leader and then write a manifesto that gave even more power to the Unions?

Having had my formative years in the late 60s and 70s in the West Riding and had a father who was brought up in the slums of Bradford I'm convinced that the British people aren't as stupid as the left think and that if Labour had found a Tony Blair then and promised the reforms you reckon Callaghan would have brought in then the Falkalnds would have been set aside and Labour would have won that election.

Frankly Labour got what it deserved.

Tony Blair led the UK into a deranged war based on his messianic belief that it was The Right Thing, Dammit, going way to the right of almost everyone who was in any way involved with or a supporter of his party.

Whoa there tiger. The Iraq war got quite a bit of support from Labour. 244 Labour MPs voted for it. In early March 2003, 33% of self-identified Labour supporters told Ipsos/MORI that they were in favour of war even without a UN resolution, and 46% said they approved of Blair's handling of the situation.

And I am really not sure about Cameron being way to the left of most Conservative MPs. Rather than just giving the vague impression of being so.

I think it proves that in 1997, the public were so sick of Tories they'd have voted for Jimmy Savile, and Labour was so sick of being in opposition they'd have run him as the candidate.
