In other words, you would prefer the next right-wing party to form a government to be made up of people from the left?

No, Economist writers represent the non-stupid, anti-authoritarian end of the centre-right. Suggesting they're from the left is as daft as Trots suggesting that the Guardian is right-wing.
It's an indication of how bad Conservative policy is on Europe that a set of policies which include making a fuss about the blue passport back can be considered desirable. It was under Thatcher it disappeared, wasn't it, and it was a silly size anyway.
